Brave Space Alliance announces board of directors

Brave Space Alliance—a Black- and trans-led "LGBTQ center on the South Side of Chicago that is dedicated to creating and providing affirming, culturally competent, for-us by-us resources, programming and services for LGBTQ individuals on the South and West sides of the city," according to its website—has announced its board of directors.
The South Side nonprofit's new board features Pride Action Tank Executive Director Kim Hunt; Chicago Reader Publisher and Windy City Times owner/co-founder Tracy Baim; filmmaker/writer/producer/director Lilly Wachowski; nationally known trans activist and mental-health advocate Valerie Spencer; activist, artist, and journalist Michelle Zacarias; Chicago trans community organizer and small-business owner Tatyana Moaton; and Chicago TransLatina community elder and longtime activist Monica Fernandez.
The move to establish a formal Board of Directors comes as Brave Space Alliance pushes for independent tax-exempt status, following three years of fiscal sponsorship under Trans United Fund and Center on Halsted, in turn.
"I'm excited to have such an amazing and powerful group of community leaders on our team going into the future. I have full confidence that they will help us take this organization to the next level, and help us fulfill our hopes and dreams for trans people on the South and West sides," said Brave Space Alliance Founder and Executive Director LaSaia Wade in a statement.
This announcement marks the latest development in a busy two-month period for the organization, which, in March, opened a permanent office in Hyde Park, and launched a pair of successful COVID-19 emergency response programs to help meet the needs of community members during the pandemic. The Brave Space Alliance Crisis Pantry has served more than 1,600 people across the city and garnered praise from former President Barack Obama, while the Trans Relief Fund has distributed more than $25,000 to trans people in need.
Brave Space Alliance was in the news recently when Wachowski, who co-created the Matrix film series with her sister, cited the organization while responding to Elon Musk and Ivanka Trump quoting her movie on Twitter. |
