Politicians in Washington, D.C., are wondering who the next speaker of the House in the wake of John Boehner's stunning announcement that he is stepping down from the post effective Oct. 30.

Boehner, 65, is reportedly resigning due to repeated pressure from conservatives during his five-year reign, Reuters noted. However, several media outlets reported that Boehner has rarely looked so relieved.

U.S. Rep. Kevin McCarthy, 50, of California, the number-two House Republican, has become the leading contender to replace Boehner. Although loyal to Boehner, McCarthy has also built personal relationships with conservative organizations.

Boehner made several anti-LGBT moves during his tenure, including stating his opposition to ENDA ( the Employment Non-Discrimination Act ).
