'Bessie,' Jane Lynch win Creative Emmys
The Creative Arts Emmyswhich took place Sept. 12 in Los Angeles at the Microsoft Theaterhad a definite LGBT bent.
For instance, former Glee star Jane Lynch claimed the Emmy for Best Reality Host for her work on Hollywood Game Night, beating out So You Think You Can Dance's Cat Deeley and Project Runway's Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn, among others.
HBO's Bessie ( a film about the late bisexual blues singer Bessie Smith that starred Queen Latifah ) was named Outstanding Television Movie, edging Grace of Monaco, Hello Ladies: The Movie, Killing Jesus, Agatha Christie's Poirot: Curtain, Poirot's Last Case and Nightingale ( another LGBT entry ).
Bradley Whitford prevailed as Outstanding Guest Actor for the transgender-focused show Transparent. Transparent also won for Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music as well as Outstanding Costumes for a Contemporary Series, Limited Series or Movie.
HBO's Game of Thrones was the big winner of the night, with eight awards.
The Primetime Emmy Awards will be broadcast live on Sunday, Sept. 20 at 8:00 p.m. ET on Fox.
Director's cut of 'Empire' out Nov. 3
Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment ( along with Columbia Records and Sony Music Entertainment ) will issue the special director's cut of the first season of the hit Fox show Empire ( courtesy of Lee Daniels ), along with a collectible soundtrack and featured character cards.
Empire's Director's Cut Pilot Edition ( which will arrive on Blu-ray Nov. 3 ) will feature collectible packaging, uncut music performances and more, including a commentary of the pilot. Soundtrack features will include such songs as "Drip Drop," "You're So Beautiful" and "No Apologies."
Regular cast members included Terrence Howard, Taraji P. Henson, Bryshere Y. "Yazz" Gray, Jussie Smollett, Trai Byers, Grace Gealey, Malik Yoba and Kaitlin Doubleday. Among the various guest stars were Gabourey Sidibe, Raven-Symone, Naomi Campbell, Jennifer Hudson, Estelle, Courtney Love and Cuba Gooding Jr.
Project&, EXPO CHICAGO join forces
As part of EXPO CHICAGO ( Sept. 17-20 ), a Project& panel will feature Hank Willis Thomas, Naomi Beckwith and Jane M. Saks on Saturday, Sept. 19, 5-6 p.m. at EXPO's VIP Anchor Lounge at Navy Pier.
Willis is a photo conceptual artist whose work is in numerous public collections, including MoMA, The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, The Whitney Museum of American Art and The Brooklyn Museum. Beckwith is the Marilyn and Larry Fields Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art. Saks a curator, creative collaborator, producer, cultural activist, writer and educator who founded Project&.
In addition, Project&, an arts organization, will present Thomas, Ryan Alexiev and Jim Ricks of the Cause Collective's In Search of the Truth ( The Truth Booth ) on Navy Pier at EXPO CHICAGO. In Search of the Truth ( The Truth Booth ) is a mobile interactive video recording booth open to the public that asks participants to look into a camera and finish the statement "The truth is..."
