On Saturday, May 31, six men from Wisconsin came into Berwyn's Janura Park
dressed in white sheets and white hoods or in Nazi military uniforms to hold a rally
which they called the 'Shock and Awe White Power Rally.' These white
supremacists were bussed into Janura Park under police escort and were brought
into the fenced-in skating rink on the west end of Janura Park, reports BUNGALO
(Berwyn United Neighborhood Gay And Lesbian Organization).
'Looking like caged animals performing at a circus, these Ku Klux Klan members
and neo-Nazi wannabees unfurled a Nazi flag and started spewing hate towards
Blacks, Hispanics, Jews and gays. Approximately 200 anti-KKK demonstrators
showed up,' BUNGALO stated. A prayer vigil against the KKK occurred at the
Presbyterian Church. The vigil was sponsored by around 20 groups, including
BUNGALO. Approximately 150 people participated in the prayer vigil, including 20
members of BUNGALO.
On June 1 members of BUNGALO joined about 40 others for a re-consecration and
re-dedication of the skating rink in Janura Park.
