Cook County Commissioner Luis Arroyo Jr. ( 8th District ) and Cook County President Toni Preckwinkle proposed 2 Resolutions banning any use of County monies in doing business with the Governments of the State of North Carolina and Mississippi and with any businesses headquartered in these States.
On March 23, 2016, the State of North Carolina adopted the Public Facilities Privacy & Security Act, which is officially known as an act to provide for single-sex multiple occupancy bathroom and changing facilities in schools and public agencies.
This legislation has been widely described as anti-LGBT, due to the Act's restriction of the definition of sex to the sex at birth, forcing all government-controlled facilities to maintain single-sex bathrooms matching an individual's biological sex at birth only, regardless of the individual's sexual identity.
The State of Mississippi followed with their own law adopted on April 5, 2016, which is dubbed the Protecting Freedom of Conscience from Government Discrimination Act.
Mississippi's new law would allow for those whose religious beliefs and moral convictions are protected by this law to discriminate against people whose lifestyles violate those beliefs and convictions - mainly LGBTQ people — and decline to provide services or products to those people without any penalization by the state of Mississippi.
"It is with great sadness that I see these ill-advised and ill-spirited laws being adopted around our Country; they not only violate our Constitution, but they completely undermine the great efforts of unification, inclusion and understanding that the majority of our fellow Americans strive for", said Commissioner Arroyo.
The measures will be heard on Wednesday, April 13, 2016 during the regularly scheduled meeting of the Board of Commissioners.
