Amigas Latinas, a support, education and advocacy group for lesbian, bisexual and questioning women of Latina heritage, celebrates its 10-year 'Diamond' Anniversary July 16, 2005 with a dance celebration at Plumbers Union Hall, 1340 W. Washington, 7 p.m.-midnight, $20. Guest DJ's include DJ Wanda, DJ Sandy and DJ Casper. In honor of the 10th birthday, a diamond pendant will be raffled along with original artwork by Amigas member Mabel Vilner.
Amigas Latinas began during one of Chicago's hottest summers with its first platica ( discussion ) on July 16, 1995. They are proud to be celebrating 10 years of providing safe space, educational opportunities and resources for the Latina les/bi women's community. Programming includes monthly topical discussions, legal, education and health workshops, advocacy training with community providers, support groups in Spanish and English and child-focused family activities.
It is still the only organization of its kind in the Chicago metropolitan area and this year the 10-women board of directors recommits itself to ensuring Amigas vision 'to celebrate who we are with pride and acceptance, without boundaries or limitations, fearlessly and unapologetically. Your support ensures that vision becomes a reality.'
Sponsors include the Lesbian Community Cancer Project ( Amigas original fiscal agent ) , Chicago Department of Public Health, Vargas Jewelry, Windy City Times and Mestiza.
