To honor Hispanic heritage and LGBT history month the Association of Latino/as Motivating Action ( ALMA ) hosted a night of fun and community at Halsted Bar and Grill Oct. 9. The event featured a Bachata dance performance by the Chicago All Stars and a youth scholarship announcement.
"As LGBT Latino/as, we cannot simply celebrate one community while ignoring the other. For the past 25 years, ALMA has been fighting to create safe spaces to highlight the beauty and the pride of being members of both of these [Hispanic and LGBT] communities," said ALMA Board of Directors President Julio Rodriguez.
"We're really excited to announce our first annual Young Latino Leaders for Creating Change Scholarship. With Comcast's $2,000 donation we will be able to send two Illinois Latino LGBTQA youth leaders to the Creating Change in Denver, Colorado, in February. Our application went live a few days ago and is available on our website so please spread the word," said ALMA Board of Directors member Mary Johnson.
According to its website, Creating Change is "the nation's pre-eminent political, leadership and skills-building conference for the LGBT social justice movement."
