Recently, the AIDS Foundation of Chicago ( AFC ) issued a press release congratulating Roland Burris on being installed as the Illinois' junior senator—but also encouraged the politician to fight aggressively for HIV/AIDS prevention.
"Illinois AIDS advocates look forward to working closely with Senator Burris to fulfill President Obama's comprehensive plans to aggressively fight HIV/AIDS in the U.S. and abroad," said AFC President/CEO Mark Ishaug. "As the sole African-American in the U.S. Senate, Mr. Burris has a unique opportunity to educate his colleagues in Congress about the ongoing crisis of HIV/AIDS in the U.S., which disproportionately affects people of color."
In filling the seat previously occupied by now-President Barack Obama, the organization is asking Burris to continue the fight against the pandemic, adding that "Obama has a long history of support for the fight against HIV/AIDS."
