After a brief break from The Nutcracker madness that is December, we're off and running with a slew of dance performances around the city. With world and city premieres, revivals, collaborations and visiting companies, the 2013 winter dance season has something for everyone.

January is jumpin':

Lucy Riner and Michael Estanich of RE|Dance Group presents the second weekend of the Chicago premiere of Homeland at The Hamlin Park Fieldhouse, 3035 N. Hoyne St., Thursday-Friday, Jan. 17-18, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15; visit www.brownpapertickets.com .

Local modern company The Dance COLEctive sets up shop for four performances of free[Bound] at Stage 773 in Lakeview, 1225 W. Belmont Ave., Thursday—Saturday, Jan. 17-20, at 8 p.m. Tickets are $25, $20 for students; call 773-327-5252 or visit www.dancecolective.com .

Massachusetts-based physical-theater troupe Double Edge Theatre combines dance, aerial work, puppets and circus arts for a unique show. The company comes to town for two performances of The Grand Parade (of the Twentieth Century) at The Dance Center of Columbia College, 1306 S. German physical theater company Mummenschanz returns to Chicago with its 40th-anniversary show at The Harris Theater for Music and Dance, 205 E. Brooklyn dance and multimedia artists Miguel Gutierrez and the Powerful People perform Gutierrez's latest work, And lose the name of action, in the Edlis Neeson Theater at The Museum of Contemporary Art, 220 E. Fab February:

The Hamburg Ballet makes Chicago the first stop on its U.S. tour. This is the first time the word-renowned company has toured here and will be performing Nijinsky at The Harris Theater for Music and Dance, 205 E. Chicago's own Joffrey Ballet heats up the local dance scene with a two-week run of their American Legends program featuring works from Twyla Tharp, Jerome Robbins, Gerald Arpino and a world premiere from Stanton Welch at The Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University, 50 E. Seattle-based husband-and-wife team zoe | juniper comes to town with a full-evening work, A Crack in Everything, inspired by the Greek tragedy The Oresteia at The Dance Center of Columbia College, 1306 S. March Madness:

Just in time for St. Patrick's Day, Michael Flatley's Irish dancing phenomenon Lord of the Dance comes to the Akoo Theatre for two performances, 5400 N. River Rd., Rosemont, Saturday, March 2, at 2 and 7 p.m. Tickets are $39.50-$72.30; call 800-745-3000 or visit www.akootheatre.com .

Once again, Melissa Thodos and Broadway legend Ann Reinking team to create a world-premiere work. Thodos Dance Chicago performs A Light in the Dark, inspired by the early life of Helen Keller, and other works at The Harris Theater for Music and Dance, 205 E. The Stephen Petronio Company comes back to Chicago after 12 years to present the critically acclaimed, evening-length work Underland at The Dance Center of Columbia College, 1306 S. Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater returns to town for a two-week of run with two different programs of audience favorites at The Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University, 50 E. Latin contemporary dance gets a nod with works by two Spanish choreographers when Luna Negra Dance Theater presents Made in Spain at The Harris Theater for Music and Dance, 205 E. Hubbard Street Dance Chicago joins forces with Alonzo King's San Francisco-based contemporary ballet company LINES Ballet for a combined bill featuring two Chicago premieres at The Harris Theater for Music and Dance, 205 E. Celebrating 40 years of dance, the Chicago Moving Company revives numerous works and presents a new piece by modern maven Nana Shineflug at The Dance Center of Columbia College, 1306 S. Turning 50 hasn't slowed down Giordano Dance Chicago.
