In an effort to connect the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community on a global scale, lesbian couple Lisa Dazols and Jennifer Chang of San Francisco embarked on a one-year trip throughout Asia, Africa, and South America. Their popular blog Out and Around: Stories of a Not-So-Straight Journey shared the stories of the couple meeting LGBT leaders and people who are changing the world around the globe.
Now, they've partnered with filmmakers Lauren Fash and Susan Graham to release a documentary about their journey in 2013. The film follows Lisa and Jenni as they leave their 9-5 jobs, travel through 16 countries, and find the "Supergays" — movers and shakers in the LGBT world who are striving for equal rights and greater acceptance.
"Thanks to the generations before us, there are now lively debates about gay soldiers, gay marriage and gay rights around the world. We started this film project to capture this exciting time," Dazols said.
Chang said, "We wanted to see what life was like outside the West. There are many reasons to feel hopeful about the future."
Their $30,000 Kickstarter campaign starts this week to raise funds for post-production costs. Director Lauren Fash said, "This is the film of our current global gay movement. This film has the potential to change attitudes around the world."
Lisa and Jenni were named among the Top 25 Most Significant Queer Women of 2012 by Velvet Park magazine. Their project Out and Around has already been covered by the Huffington Post, BBC Radio, and Curve Magazine.
