Marking its fifth anniversary, Chicago's own Pitchfork Music Festival presented another stellar line-up at Union Park July 16-18, drawing more than 54,000 fans to this indie-music paradise and sealing its reputation as one of the most friendly, cutting-edge and influential music festivals in the country. Attendees reveled in non-stop music on three stages; an art-and-crafts fair; the Flatstock poster show; freebies from hip sponsors; and food vendors offering locally grown and vegan fare.
Known for presenting legendary international bands with some of the most innovative, new, breaking bands in the world, Pitchfork 2010 did not disappoint, and may go down as one of the best in its five-year history. Early highlights include a mesmerizing solo performance by Sharon Van Etten; a rousing set by electropop sensation Robyn, who got the crowd jumping despite the 90-degree heat; the soaring harmonies and danceable sounds of the relatively unknown Wolf Parade, who won over many new fans; and an impressive headlining turn by LCD Soundsystem, whose disco-punk sounds brought most of 18,000 fans to their feet, illuminated by a giant disco ball. Sunday, July 18, was by far the biggest day for indie fans with San Francisco's super-hyped newcomer Girls setting the pace early with a sun-drenched, enthusiastic performance, and the much-anticipated Pavement reunion closing the night with a '90s grunge, slacker-metal set that left the crowd seemingly pleased but subdued.
The rest of Sunday was a veritable best-of SXSW 2010, featuring the hottest bands from last spring's Indie mecca, including Sleigh Bells, Titus Andronicus, Neon Indian, Here We Go Magic and surf-pop wunderkinds Surfer Blood, whose beach rock wowed the crowd with tight '60s guitar riffs and soaring Wilsonesque harmonies. Beach House and Best Coast brought more poppy surf sounds to the day. St.Vincent added a lush, dreamy midday set, while Major Lazer's theatrics and Chinese puppets fueled a huge, roiling mosh pit, filling the Pitchfork bowl with thousands of hands waving in the air.
In addition to the cutting-edge programming, the independent Pitchfork once again proved a model of the friendly, ethical and innovative music festival. Eschewing the price gouging of Lollapalooza and other major festivals, Pitchfork offered reasonably priced tickets, vendors with good food and low prices, bottled water for a buck, and free water stations for refills. One of the greenest festivals on the planet, Pitchfork expanded its plentiful recycling stations, offered a new free bike valet, and ramped up its biodiesel fuel use, and bought carbon off-sets for performers. |
