The Transgender American Veterans Association, along with the World Professional Association for Transgender Health and the LGBT Bar, have announced the 2018 Transgender Military Summit being held in Washington, DC June 6-8, 2018 at the Omni Shoreham Hotel.

Keynote speakers and topics are:

Jillian C. Shipherd, Ph.D. Dr. Shipherd is currently a Clinical Research Psychologist at the Women's Health Sciences Division of the National Center for PTSD at VA Boston Healthcare System and an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Boston University School of Medicine. In addition, Dr. Shipherd serves as Director for the LGBT Health Program at the Veterans Health Administration in Washington DC. Dr. Shipherd's area of expertise is the interface of mental and physical health subsequent to trauma with a focus on sexual and gender minority populations. She is internationally recognized as an expert in transgender care and is the author of over 100 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters, as well as the book Adult Transgender Care: An Interdisciplinary Approach for Training Mental Health Professionals.

Topic: Transgender Veterans and the Veteran's Health Administration

M. Joycelyn Elders, M.D. was the 15th Surgeon General of the United States. She is Professor Emeritus of Pediatrics, Division of Endocrinology at the University of Arkansas Medical Sciences ( UAMS ), and Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas. She is a Distinguished Professor of The School of Public Health at UAMS. There are Chairs established in her honor at the University of Minnesota School of Medicine, "Sexual Health Education, and at the University of Arkansas Medical Sciences, "Health Promotion and Disease Prevention." As an author and coauthor of hundreds of professional publications in the areas of pediatrics, endocrinology and public health and as a national and international speaker, Dr. Elders is a strong advocate for children's health, quality patient care and health safety.

Topic: Transgender Military Ban

Phyllis Randolph Frye is an Eagle Scout, a former member of the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets, a veteran ( 1LT-USA ), an engineer, an attorney, a father, a grandmother and a lesbian wife. She is also the first, OUT, transgender judge in the nation.

In 1976 when she transitioned to be an "out" Phyllis, she was faced with the possibility of arrest each day because of City of Houston Ordinance 28-42.4 prohibiting crossdressing. After four years of being lobbied by her, Houston City Council voted to repeal the ordinance in 1980. Joining the Houston Area League of Women Voters in 1978, she has served on a variety of its committees. She was elected in the 1980s to be one of its Vice-Presidents and was honored at the League's annual Repast luncheon in 2017. From 2003 to 2012 Phyllis served on the board of the Westbury Civic Club. She led efforts to remove graffiti, to have a highway soundwall placed between the railroad and the neighborhood, and to push the Federal Railroad Administration to extend "quiet zone" protection to the neighborhood. As a result of these and other actions, Phyllis was presented with either a Certificate of Appreciation or Mayoral Proclamations from Mayors Whitmire, Lanier, Brown and Turner.

Now having lived almost sixty percent of her life as the woman she always felt herself to be, Phyllis remains on the cutting edge of LGBTIQ and especially transgender legal and political issues. When the "gay" community was still ignoring or marginalizing the transgender community in the early 1990's, Phyllis began the national transgender legal and political movement ( thus she is known as being the national TG legal and political movement's "Grandmother" ) with the six annual transgender law conferences ( known as ICTLEP ) and the grassroots training of future transgender activists, lawyers and bloggers.
