Film screening/gathering to remember Gloria Allen 6:00pm - 8:00pm
The late trans icon Gloria Allen (also known as Mama Gloria) will take place Thursday, June 23, 6-8 p.m., at the South Side Community Art Center, 3831 S. Michigan Ave.
Luchina Fisher will screen her film, Mama Gloria, in addition to honoring the life and impact of Allen.
Mama Gloria, Fisher's directorial debut, was nominated for a 2022 GLAAD Media Award. The film premiered at the Chicago International Film Festival and BFI Flare London; won numerous jury awards; and made its broadcast debut on the World channel and PBS.
Allen-who founded and ran a charm school for homeless trans youth and was also the subject of the critically acclaimed play Charm-recently died at the age of 76. She was awarded the Living Legend Award by Janet Mock and Precious Brady-Davis at the 2014 Trans 100 Awards.
