Caryn Berman and Laura Cuzzillo were married in Des Moines, Iowa, May 29. Judge Robert Hanson, who wrote the decision legalizing same-sex marriage in Iowa ( later upheld by the state supreme court ) , officiated.
Berman and Cuzzillo met in 1977 at a gay-pride event, but it was not love at first sight. They mark April 1, 1978 as the beginning of their relationship and, yes, there was an April Fool's joke involved. They do not recommend long engagements, and encourage committed gay and lesbian couples to get married—proving that the sky does not fall and straight marriages do not crumble as a result.
